Exploring the Australian Outback
There are many popular travel destinations in Australia giving you plenty of choice for travel. Some of the more popular locations for tourists include: Sydney, Cairns, Gold Coast and Fraser Island – but there are plenty of other destinations which you should consider when planning a road trip in Australia.
In the Outback
For the more adventurous people out there why not plan a trip to the Australian outback? The Outback is a colloquial term used to describe the most remote areas of Australia.
Much of central Australia and the Northern territory form part of the Outback and these areas are vast, remote and arid. With all this considered, you will need a reliable mode of transport and this is where Avis can help you. We offer car hire services in most of Australia’s big cities, giving you freedom to start your road trip from almost any area of the country you like.
Driving in Australia gives you the opportunity to take in the country’s spectacular scenery. With one of our fantastic vehicles you can gain access to some of Australia’s most remote locations – giving you a holiday experience unlike any other.
Choosing your route
There are many routes that you can follow in the Outback but Birdsville Track, Gibb River Road and Corner County are the most popular amongst travellers.
Gibb River Road can only be travelled using a 4 x 4 vehicle and it offers spectacular landscape as you drive through the Kimberley region and arrive at the sea near Derby. Corner Country gives drivers the opportunity to visit Cameron corner, an area where South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales meet.
You can decide to take one of the routes described above or go it alone and navigate your own way through the vast expanses of the Australian Outback. Whilst we can provide you with GPS technology to help you on your way we recommend planning your route in advance to ensure you don’t get lost in the expanse of the Australian Outback.
Queensland
Hiring a car is one of the most popular ways of getting around Australia, giving you the freedom to discover even the most hidden of gems and hard-to-reach places. To make it easier for you to explore the incredible beauty and diversity the country has to offer, Avis car hire services are available in most cities and large towns: find us in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Darwin, Alice Springs, Brisbane and many more. We will provide you with a wide choice of vehicles along with comprehensive breakdown assistance and other optional extras such as GPS navigation systems and child seats.
New South Wales
The country’s oldest region and home of arguably its most famous city, state capital Sydney, New South Wales has something for everyone. Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge will take you over three hours, but it’s well worth the effort for the view over the city. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, try the magnificent Sydney Opera House, the Taronga Park Zoo, the Royal Botanical Gardens and the historic The Rocks district. Away from the city you can take even more advantage of your car rental and drive through the lush green pastures of the Hunter Valley Wine Country. The area offers great accommodation, excellent cuisine, golf courses and a variety of thrill-seeking opportunities. For a true taste of Aussie beach culture, the Australian Surf Titles every August give you the chance to watch the nation’s best surfers performing in wave-rich Port Macquarie.
Western Austalia
There’s a wealth of adventure available for all visitors to this, the largest state. Relax and enjoy soft, white sandy beaches in an incredible sunny climate: Perth, the state capital, basks in more hours of sunshine per year than any other city in Australia. If you’re after somewhere slightly cooler, try the Margaret River wine-growing region in the south-western part of the state. The area is famous for fantastic caves, vineyards offering wonderful cuisine alongside their delicious wines, and a huge variety of accommodation. Perfect for exploring with a weekend car hire. The state also encompasses much of the outback, or bush. Home of the indigenous kangaroo and emu, the outback is imbued with a wild beauty and tells some of the remarkable history of this nation.
South Australia
Don’t miss Adelaide’s Central Market, the biggest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s at its most vibrant early in the day when sellers bring in their freshest produce, but there are also live music and cooking demonstrations on Friday nights. For a more tranquil experience, try a dawn balloon flight above the Flinders Ranges. The incredible colours and fascinating land formations will enchant you as you float through the skies. The Seal Bay Beach Walk offers a rare opportunity to see huge numbers of seals sunning themselves on the beaches below the limestone cliffs, ideal for visitors with families.
For the thrill-seekers there’s whale watching and even shark cage diving if you’re feeling brave enough. To get a true all-round taste of the state, try the Royal Adelaide Show. Held every September, it showcases the best of local produce and talent, both urban and rural.
