Dublin and beyond: Destinations Features
Exploring Dublin
Dublin traces its roots back to a Viking stronghold that was established on the River Liffey in the 9th century BC. The territory was later invaded by the Normans, whose Dublin Castle—a chunky fortification constructed in 1204—now houses offices of the Irish government. Sections of it are open to the public, though, and you can wander through its lavish chambers.
Dublin’s historic architecture will not disappoint. From its rows of Georgian terraced townhouses to its grandiose churches—of which Ireland’s largest cathedral, St Patrick’s, and one of its most opulent, Christ Church, deserve a special mention—there’s plenty to explore. Pay a visit to the 1,200-year-old Book of Kells, a handwritten Celtic manuscript that’s safeguarded inside the famed Trinity College.
Dublin has a healthy appetite for a good night out, and the city’s vibrant Temple Bar district is where you can enjoy the craic with convivial locals. If Guinness is your tipple, add to your itinerary a visit to the Guinness Storehouse, where the swarthy stout has been brewed since 1759. Its Gravity Bar offers seriously epic views across Dublin, complemented delightfully by the cold pint in your hand.
Beyond Dublin
Ireland’s easily navigable road network means the entire emerald isle is open for exploration with your hire car from Dublin Airport. The heather-clad moors carpeting the sweeping expanse of Wicklow Mountains are an hour’s drive away from the capital. Lovers of the great outdoors will enjoy hiking its scenic trails.
Nearby, Glendalough is home to a medieval monastic settlement that sits in a stunning glacial valley. Brittas Bay, hemmed by sand dunes, offers a 4km stretch of dramatic coastline that’s ideal for swimming in summer. For equally spectacular seafronts, head to the glimmering shores of Bray, Dalkey or Howth, which juts out on a peninsula north of Dublin.
Inland, medieval Kilkenny is a 90-minute drive from Dublin. Nicknamed the Marble City because of its history in exporting black marble, its architecture rivals the capital’s. Most notable is the 800-year-old Kilkenny Castle, but you’ll find its traditional historic pubs are equally enjoyable spots to while away some time. The popular Kytelers Inn has enjoyed a roaring trade since 1324.
With so much to uncover on the captivating island, hire a car with Avis at Dublin airport to access the best of it.
