Munich
Make sure you leave a day or two to visit Munich, Bavaria’s beautiful capital city. Just under a two-hour drive from Nuremberg Airport (via the A9), this pretty city offers superior dining, entertainment and sightseeing. Head to Marienplatz (the central square), where the glockenspiel draws in large crowds keen to watch its daily re-enactment of two 16th century stories. Don’t miss the Marian Column – a famous landmark with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary placed at the top.
Erlangen
Just a few kilometres north of Nuremberg is the historic town of Erlangen. Its most famous building is the Schloss Erlangen – built in 1704 and used as a university since 1825. Its features include the beautiful botanic gardens and orangery. The City Museum (housed in the building that was once the town hall) is also worth a look, charting the history of Erlangen through the ages.
