Which side of the road?
In Italy, please drive on the right side of the road. Your rental car in Italy will always be a left-hand drive.
Country driving laws
- Mobile phones may only be used with a headset or hands-free device.
- Dipped headlights must be used on two-lane highways.
- On the motorway, the lane on the right is reserved for slow vehicles, the other lanes are used to overtake.
- Zebra crossings (black and white stripes on the road) give pedestrians right of way to cross the road.
- Trams and trains always have right of way.
Speed Limits
All speed signs will be in kilometres per hour (mph).
For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers:
- Urban areas: lowest 31 mph (50 km/h) in cities, minor urban our of town roads are 56mph (90km/h)
- Rural areas: 68 mph (110 km/h). Unless indicated by road signs.
- Motorways: 81mph (130km/h)
Child safety / Seatbelt laws
It is compulsory for the driver and all passengers to wear a seatbelt.
Children aged under 12 or less than 135cm tall must be seated in an appropriate child restraint for their size
