Fuerteventura is an island brimming with incredible landscapes, mouth-watering cuisine and pristine beaches. It boasts a rich history and culture down every street you turn, and when touring the island by car you’ll have easy access to all that this destination has to offer. The island’s capital, Puerto del Rosario, is just seven minutes from the airport by car. Driving along the FV-2, you’ll be greeted by coastal views and stretches of sandy beaches. The town centre has a plethora of shops and boutiques, and the wide range of restaurants serve up both local and international cuisine. Fresh fish is caught daily in the island’s waters, and appears on most menus every day.
During your trip, make sure you visit the island’s famous salt museum, called the Museo de la Sal. Locals have been producing salt from the island’s ‘salinas’, or salt basins, for over a hundred years. Although it’s called a museum, these basins are still fully operational. Walk through the cone-shaped salt pikes and see how workers harvest the mineral.
Between the one-humped camels, the charming goats (which outnumber the island’s human population), and the fearless Barbary squirrels, that will eat food from your hands, Fuerteventura has a wealth of wildlife on show. The island’s goats produce cheeses that are famous across the Canary Islands.
With your Avis hire car you’ll be able to explore all of this and more, at your own leisurely pace.
Beyond Fuerteventura Airport
There are plenty of wonderful surprises to see when exploring the island beyond Puerto del Rosario. The island itself takes about two hours to drive from the northernmost to the southernmost point, and there are exceptional sights to discover along the way.Parque Natural de Corralejo
This nature park is easily reached by car and it's just a 20-minute journey from the airport. Stretching 10km along the coast, the park features a diversity of landscapes; the sand dunes and rocky outcrops extending into the sea are particularly striking. There are also excellent spots for sunbathing and swimming here.
Centro de Arte Canario
Just north of Fuerteventura Airport is Centro de Arte Canario. This is an unusual art museum that’s well worth a visit. There are sculptures in the museum’s gardens and the galleries exhibit pieces from local Canary Island artists. Two of these galleries are also devoted to Alberto Manrique, a celebrated painter.
Jandía Natural Park
An hour-and-thirty-minute drive from Fuerteventura airport is Jandía Natural Park. The beaches here are nothing short of stunning, stretching far along the coastline. In this part of the island, the sand seems particularly white and the sea that much clearer. Visit the park’s lighthouse, which is also a museum, to discover more about this nature reserve. Keep a lookout for wildlife like Egyptian vultures and kestrels, which soar through the skies.
Everywhere you drive to on Fuerteventura you’re sure to enjoy the journey and the destination.
