Plan your journey around Seville
Seville has always been somewhat of an attraction, enticing people from far and wide for centuries – from Spanish royalty to the poet Lord Byron, who praised the area for producing beautiful oranges and women. The composer Georges Bizet chose the city for the setting of his tragic opera, Carmen. Today, visitors flock to Seville to immerse themselves in the city’s colourful culture. With its laid-back attitude and eclectic mix of must-see sights, Seville has plenty to offer. To say Seville has its fair share of impressive historical landmarks is an understatement. The city centre is an amalgamation of historical sites, three of which have been granted UNESCO-listed status. Seville’s 15th century cathedral, built during the 1400s, stands on the site of a former mosque and is the largest gothic cathedral in the world. The tomb of Columbus resides on the cathedral grounds. Nearby is Alcázar, a one-time Moorish fort that became a royal palace. Its architectural style is a combination of Islamic and Christian design. Lastly, there’s the 16th-century Archivo General de las Indias, which holds the travel archives of Christopher Columbus and his countrymen.
After visiting these main attractions, the best way to discover Seville is to walk around and soak up the atmosphere. It’s not uncommon to hear the strum of a guitar as a young man serenades his betrothed. Flamenco dance troupes often turn up unexpectedly in local bars, cafes or on street corners, creating a lively buzz in the area. No trip to Seville is complete without tapas. The city invented the Spanish appetisers and cruising from one tapas bar to the other, sampling sumptuous specialties, is one of the most pleasant pastimes in Spain.

Beyond Seville
While there’s plenty to see and do in Seville, road trips beyond the city help to fully paint a picture of Spain’s southern Andalucía region. Relax in your hire car and accelerate away from the city. No matter which direction you steer your rental car, you’ll discover pleasant surprises en route, as well as at your chosen destination.Córdoba
During the Middle Ages Córdoba was one of the most important cities in Spain. The main attraction is the Mezquita – a mosque that’s 1,000 years old. The interior is a superb sight. Along with some 50 chapels, it also features an entire Renaissance cathedral, which took around 250 years to build. Cordoba is a short 40-minute ride away from Seville.
Parque Natural Sierra de Hornachuelos
Andalucía has many conservation areas, but the 600-sq-km area of Parque Natural Sierra de Hornachuelos is one of the best. Only an 80-minute drive away from Seville along the A-4, the park is home to the second-largest colony of black vultures in the region. The wooded forests and river valleys are best explored on foot, while the visitor centre provides information on the various trails to choose from. This is a perfect place to stop for a break and embrace the region’s natural side.
Merida
Set off early from Seville and drive just under two hours via the E-803 until you reach Merida, the capital of the Extremadura region. The town is home to more Roman ruins than anywhere else in Spain and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Highlights include an amphitheatre from the 1st century BC, a multi-arched Roman bridge from the same period and a well-curated museum of art and archaeology.
