Beyond Leeds
Perfectly located on the border of West and North Yorkshire, Leeds is an ideal base for exploring the region. A variety of attractions in the surrounding countryside are just a scenic drive away.
Fans of the Bronte sisters will want to flock to Haworth, 40 minutes to the west, to visit the handsome parsonage where their literary classics were born. Hebden Bridge, nearby, is a well conserved mill town with an alternative vibe, crammed full of second-hand bookshops, craft shops and organic cafes (you’ll find no high street chains).
Climb the hills to nearby Heptonstall, a former handloom weavers' capital. Poet Sylvia Plath is buried here.
It’s a two hour drive north to Gateshead. Travellers will come face to face with Anthony Gormley’s 20-metre-tall statue Angel of the North, rising just off the A1 motorway.
Roundhay Park
Around half an hour up the road (via the A58), Roundhay Park is home to Tropical World – one of Leeds’ favourite family attractions. This award-winning sight features wildlife such as crocodiles, snakes, butterflies, lemurs, bats and a family of meerkats. Different habitats can also be explored, ranging from jungle to desert.
Aberford
Drive 25 minutes from Leeds city centre (via the M1) and you’ll arrive in the charming village of Aberford. This is home to Lotherton Hall – an Edwardian country estate that offers an activity-packed day out. Here it’s possible to dress up in traditional period outfits and discover the estate’s history through interactive features.
