Canada is the second largest country in the world by area. It has lots of fantastic places to explore: Niagara Falls, the spectacular Vancouver scenery and historical, yet urban Montreal - to name just a few, and hiring a car is the best option if you want to fully enjoy it.

When driving, one of the first things you'll notice on Canadian roads are the horizontal traffic lights. For left turns, there is normally a separate traffic light, and often a lane separated from the others with a pavement. For right turns, there is normally an offshoot lane starting before the turn itself.

Right turns on a red light are possible if there are no other cars, pedestrians or restriction signs, but note that drivers are obliged to stop and look around before making this turn.

Speed limits are often lower than in the UK. In cities traffic is slow moving and it’s easy to move between the several lanes of traffic that often occupy main roads.

At uncontrolled intersections you should always give way to traffic on the right, whether it is a 3-way intersection or not.
