The advertising slogan ‘Grace Space Pace’ was coined in the 1950s to promote Jaguar’s stylish, luxurious and exciting cars. It’s been hailed as one of the most inspirational car slogans of all time and it still succinctly defines Jaguar’s current range, many of which are available to rent with Avis.
Although those three words are still very apt, 60 or so years later they no longer fully encapsulate where the Jaguar brand is today. Ideally, a present-day slogan would also convey reliability, economy, safety and state-of-the-art technology, though making all that rhyme with ‘ace’ would be another matter.
Avis has a wide variety of Jaguar models for hire, which only leaves you to decide how much grace, space, pace and the rest you require.
Invigorating performance, outstanding refinement and opulent interiors have long been the brand’s hallmarks, and the Jaguars of today more than live up to those characteristics while also adding state-of-the-art safety and tech features.
The E-Pace, for example, is equipped as a minimum with 8-way adjustable front seats, an entertainment system with 10-inch touchscreen plus emergency braking, a rear-view camera, cruise control with speed limiter, lane keep assist, driver condition monitoring and front and rear parking assist.
As you move up the range, the equipment levels and appointments become ever greater, culminating with the superb XJ saloon which exudes luxury and status from every angle. As a minimum the XJ’s interior boasts sumptuous heated leather seats, hand-crafted wood veneers, a 12-speaker 250-watt audio system, and all this and much more under a heat-reflecting, UV-filtering panoramic glass roof.
The first car to bear the Jaguar name was the SS 1 sports saloon of 1935, with Jaguar Cars Ltd. being incorporated in 1945. But the Coventry maker didn’t fully enter the public consciousness until the late 1940s and 1950s when its XK120 roadster set multiple speed records and C-Type and D-Type Jaguars romped to victory no less than five times in the gruelling Le Mans 24-hour race.
Offering the legendary 150mph E-Type along with a handful of swish and sporty saloons, Jaguar’s commercial heyday was in the 1960s, despite the limited model range. Over the ensuing decades the brand endured some rocky times but having been acquired by Tata Motors in mid-2008, it’s now stronger than ever with a far more comprehensive line-up.
The XE is a refined and efficient sports saloon, the XF a larger business-class saloon or estate, the E-Pace is Jaguar’s compact SUV, the F-Pace a luxury performance SUV and the XJ a roomy, sporty and highly luxurious premium saloon. Or, if you lust for a pulse-quickening two-seater coupé or convertible, then one of the five fabulous F-Type variants on our fleet will more than fit the bill.
All Jaguar’s current models reflect the marque’s much-admired British heritage while echoing the sentiment of that memorable ad slogan. But times have changed, and for the better. For example, the sporty E-Pace R Dynamic SUV returns 60.1mpg (combined), the capacious XF Sportbrake has up to 1,700 litres of loadspace with the rear seats folded flat while the supercharged 550hp V8 F-Type can hit 186mph, conditions permitting of course...
